Several fishermen sell their catch directly to restaurants, consumers and seafood retailers. The direct marketing model allows fishermen to tell the story of their fish and the region directly to consumers, creating a personal and lasting relationship. Direct marketers are also known as catcher-processors since they head and gut their salmon onboard before shipping to their markets.

In addition to the Copper River Tagging Project, several direct marketers have developed their own tags to certify the authenticity of their salmon. These tags create brand recognition in the marketplace and ensure that consumers are purchasing genuine Copper River salmon.

Currently a small percentage of Copper River and Prince William Sound fishermen direct market their fish. However, each year more fishermen are establishing their own markets.
